Harris Self Catering

Harris Travel Tips

If you are planning to visit the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland, and you have not been to this part of the world before, prepare yourself for something of a culture shock! The world you are about to see is vastly different from anything you have ever seen before. At the earliest opportunity may I suggest, that to fully enjoy the Hebridean experience, you stay in bed and breakfast or self catering accommodation. Although you might think that I have said this because staying in a Harris Hotel can prove rather expensive but this is not the main reason. The simple truth is that, by staying B&B you will enjoy some of the finest hospitality in Scotland (possibly the world) and, by staying self catering, you can fully immerse yourself into the culture of the Hebrides.

There are two things you are going to notice the minute you arrive in Harris, firstly the breathtaking scenery can not be missed but, if you to South Harris then you will, almost immediately, begin to notice the many wonderful beaches. of course there is lots more to see. Golden eagles can be spotted and, in one particular place, a family of swans visit every year to stay in one oth the thousands of lochs dotted all over Harris. Sadly many visitors to the islands have not been forewarned about some of the unique aspects of driving in the Hebrides, such as sheep suddenly appearing infront of you from nowhere (the lambs can be a real nuisance) or the amazing appearance of a stag (usually at dusk or dawn at the roadside). Such incredible sights can cause problems for others on the road as you will, no doubt, automatically, without thinking, slow down. This can be very dangerous, especially on single track roads (see the link above).

When I get a chance I will include a few more hints and tips on how you can make the most of your vacation on the Isle of Harris in the Hebrides and I may take a look at some of the nearby islands such as the Isle of Scalpay.

 So call back soon.
